In April 1950, Rough and Ready became the only mining town to officially secede from the Union. I was in 1859 that Colonial R.F. Brundage cam up with the concept of separate republic. Since the town wanted to Celebrate July 4th Independence Day of the United States the miners realized They could not participate in the party and decided to join the Union and the Party was once again. Today it is simply beautiful, 1,000 residents living in about three square miles.
